Objective of Rian Thai

Rian Thai is a non-profit, research journal support by Chulalongkorn University under a yearly budget allocated to the Institute of Thai Studies with a strong intention to promote knowledge about Thai and Tai Studies and to support Thai Studies researchers who have focused their field of interest connected with Thailand. Accordingly, the journal is open to research regarding Tai and Thai ethnic groups and also to research relating to Tai or Thai, even though not located in Thailand. 

Rian Thai has an experienced editorial team from a variety of fields: Humanities, Social Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Engineering, Medical Science, Education, Public Health, Politics, Natural Resources. The editorial team also comprises scholars from all over the world, currently encompassing: China, Korea, Japan, India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Apart from the editorial team, the journal maintains contact with prominent professors in specific fields that relate to the articles to be published in order to help meet international standards of research. The article to be published should be original and should not have been published elsewhere under the same title. Every article is blind reviewed by at least two peer reviewers, at least one from the editorial team. 

Rian Thai, published twice a year (January-June and July-December) with 6-8 articles in each volume, includes subject matter that either come from intensive research by scholars or as part of an advance degree thesis or dissertation. In order to promote new Thai Studies scholars and interdisciplinary researchers, at least fifty percent of the journal is reserved for young and new scholars in Thai Studies. 

The subject of the articles is generally in one of the following:

– Thai Studies – both as area studies and a specific field of study;

– Tai Studies – both area studies and some specific topics, such as Linguistic, Literature,

– Ethnography, Anthropology, Sociology, Politics, Health Science;

– Buddhist Studies and Thai Buddhism – For Buddhist Studies the research should be done in the Thai region and help to understand TaiThai Buddhism;

– Current issues regarding Thailand in a global context;

– Trends and critical theory on a subject in the Tai-Thai region; and 

– Regional and comparative research, of which Thailand is a major subject of the research or that aims for an understanding of Tai-Thai.

Policy for Submitting Articles

Articles that relate to the subjects listed above are welcome, but not limit, as other fields of study will also be considered. Please note, the editors have the right to reject articles that violate Thai cultural heritage or affect the security of the territory.

While the articles will be sent to at least two peer reviewers, the editors may choose other scholars who specialize in the particular field of study to read and comment on the article. The contributor should answer all of the reviewer’s questions in order to receive a letter of acceptance. All the reviewers must agree to accept the article; if either peer reviewer or the editors suggest not accepting the article, the contributor will need to start the process from the beginning. The contributor has the right to request the name and position of the peer reviewers, but only after the article is ready to be published. In the case of articles that are rejected, the contributor also has the same right, but if the contributor already knows the reviewer of their article, that article can not be submit to the journal for reconsideration.

Format of Submissions

The format of the final draft should meet the following:

– No more than 12 pages, single spaced, 12 point type for each article including footnotes, references and monotone pictures.

– Quotations of more than four lines should be indented.

– Please note that the use of special fonts and diacritics is acceptable, but may need consultation with the author for correct presentation (For more information, please contact our staff or log on to our website).

– Figures, photos and illustrations that enhance the text are encouraged. Electronic versions of any such insertions would be preferable, but, if not available, a clean, good quality hard copy can be provided.

– All figures, etc. to be included should be accompanied by a short caption briefly describing the figure. Please note that unless special arrangements are made, any figures, etc. submitted will not be returned.

– The journal has a limit in printing full color pictures, so figures should be changed into monotone before submission. If full color is necessary and will impact an understanding of the article, not more than two A5 pages will be considered for each article.

– Articles should be accompanied by a short abstract and a brief one sentence bibliography of the author.

– Citations to works referenced should use the MLA style. All footnotes should be manually inserted by the insert function in MS Word program.

Remarks

We strongly suggest the contributor use MS Word for writing their article. Articles created in MS office for Macintosh or others writing program should be converted.

The contributor should submit their articles electronically and it is suggested that an Adobe pdf copy of the file also be submitted to show specific formatting and layout desired by the author. Articles can be sent by e-mail or other electronic medium.
